I am expecting the Fall 2011 6th
grade classes to be a challenge. Many of
these students were already having trouble back in the 4th grade,
and many of them continued to struggle throughout the 5th
grade. While there are many excellent
students in the 6th grade classes, a small minority of students are
going to need a lot of help if they are to improve their English. This situation is foremost in my thoughts as
I write this semester outline, and I will be doing my utmost to address this
situation during the 2011-2012 school year.
The topics covered in grade 6 include
musical instruments, housework and daily routines, feelings, locations, and
actions. Sports and countries are also
discussed at the end of the book, but there is rarely time to explore these
topics in detail. It can be difficult to
create interest around the musical instruments chapter, especially since many
students don’t play an instrument, and have little interest in classical
music. The feelings chapter can also be
a problem, since many students have already learned these words in classes
outside of school. I find that the other
three chapters are much easier to teach, and there are many fun activities that
we can do in relation to locations and actions.
As far as difficulty goes, the grade 6
textbooks aren’t much harder than the grade 5 textbooks. Students who have learned the material in
grade 5 will have little difficulty in grade 6, and students who have struggled
in grade 5 will continue to struggle in grade 6 – unless they decide to change
certain habits.
Phonics covered during grade 6 are
dipthongs (“oi,” “oy,” “ou,” etc.), the digraph “oo,” and hard/soft “C.” These sounds don’t seem to present a problem
for 6th graders, though the vocabulary presented in relation to
these phonics concepts is much more numerous than that presented in grade 5.
For some classes, I will be trying to
incorporate remedial activities into the normal lessons, hopefully for the
benefit of students who didn’t quite master the grade 5 materials. Some behavior issues will probably need to be
resolved around the beginning of the semester, but once we have established the
ground rules for my class, I think we will have a better start this year than
we did last year.

Oral (Speaking) Test #1

Notes
l This class follows a month-by-month schedule, with an art project, a
ball game, a test, and a DVD presentation presented with a four-week
timeframe. Not every class will have
their lessons on the same week.
l Written tests are tests of written English and reading
comprehension. The oral test is a test
of listening comprehension and speaking ability. All of the material tested is to be found
within the book.
l Every class will be made as interactive as possible, with a variety
of learning styles accommodated. I use
songs, movement, and other methods throughout the semester.
l Each semester we have a “special topic,” which is an extension of
something in the textbook. The subjects/vocabulary
covered during these “special topic” sessions will not be the subject of any
test.
